I talked with Janie for about 1 1/2 hours on Saturday night. For so long that my battery died on my home telephone. It was a great conversation. She started off asking me questions about the Bible and about forgiveness of sins, etc... It sounds like she became a Christian when she went to jail for a few days. It was where "God got my attention." Anyway, when she and her husband weret separated for awhile, she began really reading her Bible. It sounds like she reads it quite a bit, but has a lot of questions. She has also been reading the King James Version and so I told her that I would mail her a different translation that she could understand better. So, today I mailed her the NIV Life Application Bible and can't wait until she gets it! We are going to read through a book together and talk about it. It is so absolutely wonderful getting to invest in her in this way. What a HUGE privilege!
Janie seems like a very thoughtful, goal-oriented person. She has attended some college and was working as a GED tutor helping high school dropouts get their GED. She was majoring in elementary education when she needed to stop school due to her financial aid running out and having 3 kids! But it sounds like she would really like to go back to school to finish her degree.
Janie lives in a very remote area in the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky. She does own her home, but it is very modest and is heated with coal! As she says, "It is a pain to have to add coal to the burner in the middle of the night when it is really cold!" I bet! Talking with her has made me appreciate so much more what I have. It is so easy to look around and not be content, but talking with her makes me realize just how much I have been blessed with. She doesn't have a car, the town doesn't have taxis or buses and so she has to rely on friends to take her to get food, etc... She doesn't have a phone that she can call out on (she can only receive calls), so Jeff and I are trying to take care of that for her so that she can call us when she wants and call the doctor when needed. She has high blood pressure and so that scares me for her. I just want to make sure she is cared for!
Because of her high blood pressure, Janie has given birth to all 3 of her kids around week 37. With this in mind, she will be traveling to Utah the first week in December (her very first plane ride!). At that point, she will see the doctor in Salt Lake City and he will set a date to induce. It would be great for her to hold off until week 38, but we will take 37 too! At week 37 we will be home for Christmas probably! She said that all 3 boys were healthy at 37 weeks, so that put my mind somewhat at ease.
We have decided to have more of an "open" relationship with one another after the adoption. I'm not sure exactly what that will look like, but am very happy that she is open to it. She told me that she just wanted to make sure that I was comfortable with anything we decide on. It is such an amazing experience getting to know the birthmother of my child. I count it as one of my biggest blessings in life. I really can't even communicate with words how all of this feels, but I am so grateful that God is allowing me to experience it. Adoption is such an amazing thing - maybe because it mirrors our adoption by God. Or maybe because I am getting to experience this beautiful life through someone else's sacrifice. All I know is that every time I ponder it, I well-up with tearful gratitude. And to think that I may not have experienced all of this if the China adoption had just come sooner or if we had been able to have our own children. It is times like this when I just KNOW that God is in control and desires good things for His children.
